'Echo' trailer: Kingpin lords over Marvel's new series

All five episodes will stream simultaneously on Hulu and Disney+ in January.

It's good to be King(pin). Marvel's next streaming series, Echo, stars a lesser-known hero who was introduced into the MCU in 2021's Hawkeye, but the big presence lording over its new trailer is none other than Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin.

Unveiled in the 2015 Daredevil series before entering the official MCU with Hawkeye, the Kingpin has a strong paternal attachment to the deaf Maya Lopez, a.k.a. Echo (Alaqua Cox).

"Maya, I see everything that you are. I always have," Fisk intones in a flashback, before savagely beating a street vendor who was rude to the young girl. That sounds like not only a promise, but also a threat.

Back in Hawkeye, Maya Lopez was an enemy of Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) because she blamed him for killing her gangster father. But she later learned that Kingpin had actually orchestrated his death so that he'd have more control over her.

In this new series, Maya will finally confront her dark mentor. The trailer ends with her holding him at gunpoint as he asks, "You and I are the same, so who's the monster?"

"It's a tough character to play in that it's based on a lot of his pain from his childhood," D'Onofrio told EW in 2021 about reprising the role for Hawkeye. "Once I reconnected to the way I played him [on Daredevil], what the events in his life were, and attached myself to the emotional aspects of the character, then it was fine, I was good to go. I know that we were picking up with the same guy."

All five episodes of Echo will premiere Jan. 10 on both Hulu and Disney+. (Your Disney+ profile will need to be set to "TV-MA" in order to access it there.)
